when I went to check the bin this morning...it was gone!!! I'm not sure if the garbage collectors took it or if someone else did. To me, it doesn't look like trash! Ack. If someone else took it for their own use... that would make me happy. But if it went to the dump... bring on the sad face.

On April 20 C Lemon put up a sign at the spot of the missing bin.

it reads, "Has anyone seen the HI-5 recycle bin that was placed here for public use?

It's free because it's yours, that doesn't mean you get to destory it.

Here are the pics. I'm sending you all of them so you can pick your
favorites. It is at Noela & Paki (across from Kapi' olani Park). We
chose the location carefully, as a place where the bin would not be
thrown out, and would actually be used. I put two cans in it so people
would understand, and when we came back an hour later the cans were
gone!

Scott passed our HI 5 bin about 9:07 Am today. It had a few bottles in it. I passed by it on my run this afternoon, about 5:30 PM. It was still there, and there was nothing in it! YAY!

Ok! Here's my first update!!! The bin has been set up for a day and basically I've been putting all of my recyclables in there (which only amounted to a few bottles). However, I left early this morning at 7am and when I returned at 2pm they were gone ~ someone took them to recycle...yay!

Update on my bin ~ when I came home from dinner tonight the bin was 3/4 full...yay ~ it's totally working ~

Step 5 - Castle High School Back Story

In January 2009, a teacher at Castle High School in Kaneohe asked for several bins to place across their campus. She said that a group of them is sick and tired of seeing recyclable beverage containers dumped into the trash. We gave them 10. The system was immediately successful. Cans and bottles got left in the bins instead of trash cans. Cans and bottles disappeared. Magic.

However, a couple of teachers began to see the vanished cans as vanished cash. Since it was presumed that it was probably the groundskeepers or custodians who picked them up, the disgruntle thought this 'unfair.' They want to control this system of free exchange. They are thinking of crossing out the [TAKE] and [WHATEVAS] part of the signs - thereby turning the anarchic bins into private property (!) that only a chosen few will manage.

So the bins at Castle High are currently in the midst of controversy and we have been invited to attend a meeting.

Step 4

So far 7 bins have been requested. 4 from individuals with plans of their own and 2 from organizations - 2 / The Arts at Mark's Garage and 1 / Styrophobia. Styrophobia is bringing a bin along as they participate in an Earth Day event on Saturday April 4, 2009 at Kawainui Neighborhood Park, 750 Kaha St. in Kailua from 10am - 3pm.
